If the familiar line, "Is there a doctor in the house?" were asked at KGO Radio, the answer would be a resounding "Yes." KGO's resident physician is Dr. Dean Edell, who hosts a nationally-syndicated talk show each weekday from 1 p.m. noon to 2 p.m., dispensing medical information from the studios at KGO Radio to listeners across the country.

Dean, who began his "electronic practice" on KGO in 1979, was one of the first media doctors. A voracious researcher, Dean practices an eclectic kind of medicine, answering questions on just about any medical subject that comes across the phone lines.

"Because I don't have a private practice, I have time to do the research required to intelligently instruct callers as to how and where they might find assistance with health problems."

Dean, an ophthalmologist and surgeon, earned his M.D. at Cornell University, where he also completed his undergraduate work in zoology with additional studies in architecture and mechanical engineering. A native of New York, Dean moved to San Diego for his residency and later became an Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the University of California at San Diego. He served as medical director of the county alcohol and drug rehabilitation center in Sacramento before moving to the Bay Area in 1980.

Dean is also the staff medical reporter for KGO TV Channel 7, where he appears daily on the 5 and 6 p.m. newscasts. He and his family live in Mendocino county, California.
